Animal Care Specialist

We Care Animal Rescue is looking for experienced animal care professionals to work as Animal Care Specialists. We have shifts in the mornings and in the late afternoons – early evenings. The Animal Care Specialists are key members of the shelter since they ensure the animals are healthy by providing needed medications.

We Care Animal Rescue is a private non-profit organization established in 1982.  Our shelter serves as a refuge for homeless cats in the Napa Valley.  We foster and promote the general welfare of the animals by caring for them, finding them homes, tending to their medical needs, and educating the public on animal welfare.  The comfort and well-being of our animals is our top priority.

Responsibilities

Animal Care
• Ensures all animals are handled properly, humanely, and with compassion by all
• Checks charts for special care notes from previous shift and incorporates in daily schedule
• Checks diabetic cats; gives insulin injections and provides food as prescribed
• Reviews medication list including detailed notes and prepares for rounds
• Prepares medicine meatballs and feeds to designated cats
• Sets up all bowls for wet food; feeds all cats in the facility and feral cats outside of building
• Administers subcutaneous fluids for those required during feeding
• Checks all animals for general health and normal behavior while animals are eating
• Checks for animals in distress or injured
• Turns on lights, equipment (washer/dryer); unlocks facility when coming into the buildings

Safety
• Proficient at reading animal body language; acts accordingly towards fearful or aggressive animals
• Models and encourages safe practices and regulatory compliance throughout the organization
• Commits to a high standard of safety; complies with all safety laws and the employer’s safety rules
• Maintains appropriate files and records as assigned; adheres to the files and records retention policies and procedures

Other Duties
• Provides courteous, prompt and responsive service to visitors, volunteers and general public
• Assists in training volunteers
• Performs as a collaborative team member
• Provides assistance as needed

Experience and Skills

  • Passionate for the mission and goals of We Care Animal Rescue; knowledge of and compassion for domestic animals and wildlife
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with animals, either personally or professionally
  • Experience working as a shelter staff member with medical care experience and/or as a We Care Shelter Technician or training to be a vet technician
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Able to read animal body language; understands how to work with fearful or aggressive animals
  • Ability to stay focused, professional and calm in a fast paced, emotionally charged environment
  • Demonstrates accuracy, thoroughness, neatness and dependability to produce work
  • Good customer service skills
  • Manage multiple tasks in a busy environment; can promptly adjust to changing deadlines and priorities
  • Capable of working independently and as a member of a team
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work irregular hours, weekends and holidays
  • Possession of valid California drivers’ license
  • Able to pull and/or push items weighing up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds
